Feb. 8, 2022 | Greece

If you look inland, you can come to Ano Mera, the second largest town in Mykonos. You won't find sea and beaches here, but this settlement is interesting in other ways. In the town you can:

  • experience the history and ancient traditions of the population;
  • buy in a supermarket (prices are cheaper than in coastal settlements);
  • visit monasteries and ancient ruins;
  • to feel the atmosphere of calm rest and restrained beauty.

To be comfortable to move around the island, it is best to rent a car. You can do it near the airport. From the capital of Mykonos and from the airport to Ano Mera, the trip will take you no more than 15 minutes.

Landmarks

The first thing to go see is the monastery of Panagia Turliani. It is located on the main town square. The interior decoration, bells, sculptural images and the marble fountain will surprise you with its splendor.

In the monastery operates a museum where you can see the Byzantine icons, carved iconostasis and other religious things of the Middle Ages.

Also worth seeing is the 18th-century Paleokastro Monastery and the ruins of Gizi Castle, which towers over the city. And a bonus to this attraction will be the incredible panoramic views from the top of the hill.

On the outskirts of Ano Mera, you can visit vineyards and a winery. Here you will learn about the traditional ways of making wine, you can relax and taste different types of wine. You can also buy a bottle as a souvenir.

What else can you do in the city

Be sure to visit the local stores and souvenir shops. In Ano Mera there's a craft store where you can make your own candles and pottery. Take a walk around the central square and stop at a cozy tavern where you can enjoy Greek national dishes made with fresh produce. Take a tour by bike through the neighborhood and explore the old neighborhoods, the traditional Greek houses and the atmosphere.

When is the best time to visit

The island has a pleasant and warm climate. While the beach season opens from May to mid-autumn, sightseeing is possible year-round.

The main advantage of Ano Mera is that it is very easily accessible from any part of Mykonos. One day is enough to get to know the history and the flavor of the settlement. If you come here in the morning, by evening you can go and explore the other beauties of the island.
